Why it matters
A precise term can change the meaning of a result. Balance is not always equity; realized PnL is not unrealized PnL; a hedge reduces exposure but does not erase risk.

Balance and equity look different
Open-position PnL can make equity differ from realized balance.
Hedge and short look identical
A hedge is a short position used for a defined protective role; not every short is a hedge.
